Riviera Maya, which includes Tulum, has a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry climate, with little temperature differences between seasons.
Tulum has sunny, warm weather year round, moderated by onshore trade winds called el Norte. The average temperature is 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) with little humidity.
Winter nights can go down to a cool 65 degrees F (19 degrees C). Summer temperatures can run as high as 100 degrees F (38 degrees C) although ocean breezes keep Tulum comfortable compared to other areas of Mexico. The ‘rainy season’ runs from July through November. The annual rainfall is 59 inches (1.5 metres).
The busy winter tourism season overtakes the area from mid-December to April. Weather is most favorable from November through February.
It is rare for Riviera Maya or Tulum to get hurricanes or tropical storms, but it is a fact of life. These storms tend to move slowly enough for people to avoid danger, and there is a 3-day warning system in the area that keeps everyone advised of changing situations. Hotels and villas are experienced in keeping guests safe and happy during these storms. Tourists should not worry about vacationing during this period when the best deals and the best weather can be available.
