Start your Adventure

Your morning begins as one of the local bilingual guides picks you up in an air-conditioned van at your hotel, Posada Yum Kin. Driving from Tulum to Punta Allen along the coastal road. You will see miles upon miles of pristine white beaches bordered with coconut palm trees and undisturbed dunes.

On the other side of the road, brackish and freshwater lagoons create a peaceful and delicate landscape. While you pass the colorful estuary of Boca Paila, you move into more remote portions of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere. Here, birdwatchers may experience a casual encounter with rare types of Ospreys and woodpeckers. Or perhaps you’ll come across our native species of deer, raccoons and other mammals along this road.

The Boat Ride to Punta Allen

Along the road called Paso Lagartos, you will leave the air-conditioned van and take a boat to the lagoons. En route toward the fishing town of Punta Allen, you will stop at a small mangrove island and a breeding site for aquatic birds. Colored rosette spoonbill can be found keeping company with herons, ibis and egrets. A cenote–a small freshwater lagoon lined by limestone–gives your local guide the opportunity to explain the hydrology of the Yucatan peninsula and the relationship between cenotes and the distribution of the manatee populations.

In town you will experience the peaceful and quiet lifestyle of the Punta Allen community. Learn how they have been developing a conservation-oriented, profitable way of life using ocean resources and their fishing expertise. Then prepare for your boat tour by ordering your picnic lunch and testing the fit of your snorkel gear. As you head toward the coral reef barrier, you will encounter sea turtles, starfish and dolphins swimming freely, sometimes right along the side of your boat.

During an hour of exploring the amazing underwater world of the coral reef, you will see thousands of colorful fish and other marine animals that live in this fragile ecosystem. After lunch, the group will take a short hike to Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon) to learn about UNESCO and the criteria they used to declare the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve a World Heritage site.

Return to Posada Yum Kin

Heading back, first by boat and then, once again by air-conditioned van, you can enjoy the wonderful landscapes that the sunset provides over the lagoons and arrive at Yum Kin by evening. You might consider ordering your dinner ‘at home’ tonight to dine in your suite or poolside; there are several area restaurants that deliver.

This is a fairly active excursion requiring intermittent effort throughout, including walking and climbing stairs.

Posada Yum Kin is an eco-friendly, 9-unit, boutique hotel in Tulum, Mexico and features fully equipped kitchens, a new pool and complimentary breakfasts. It possesses a ‘real Mexico’ atmosphere, but fully concentrates on luxury, while offering a little bit of condo convenience.
